Toke Hustling

Author: Crystal Ware

It's a bit of a touchy subject and one that has very little middle ground. You're either for it or against it and most in the Las Vegas hotel scene are against. The practice of aggressively hustling for tokes, (tips) toke hustling is certainly alive and well in casinos, bars and card rooms though most often without management approval. Most reputable establishments frown on the practice and will fire staff when caught. It can be a very awkward situation, particularly to someone who is not a casino regular and not familiar with what is and is not proper casino etiquette. An aggressive dealer can make a gambler feel obligated to tip far more than the situation calls for though this is usually a double edged sword. The dealer may score a great tip that time however, the chances of that gambler sticking around or returning after being aggressively hustled are very slim. There may be short term gain, but usually at the cost of long term loss of clients. So why does the practice still continue? With places like Vegas or Reno or Atlantic City being such hot tourist destinations, there is never a shortage of fresh unaware faces to hustle.
From the other perspective, it is easy to see why some dealers and bar staff resort to toke hustling. Most work for minimum wage or slightly above and their tips are a vitally important part of their pay. Exactly the same as in the service industry, tips are often the main motivation for people choosing their particular position. Most people tip when dining out and the same etiquette applies when gambling or accepting bar service. The easiest way to avoid the dreaded toke hustle is to tip appropriately. If they are working hard and doing a good job then they should be tipped accordingly. By the same token, if you feel your service was sorely lacking, then tipping out of obligation is only going to reward low standards.
