Las Vegas City Guide
Author: Roberto Raffa
Las Vegas seems an odd place to build a city; in the middle of the Mojave Desert in Nevada with no real water source, it's hot and miles from anywhere. Astonishingly however, this hasn't stopped it from becoming America's playground and the world's largest gambling city.
Las Vegas is a fantasy world built to entertain. Where else can you see the Eiffel Tower, the Egyptian Pyramids and the Empire State building within a 15 minute walk? Even though it is a contrived city where nothing is really real, Las Vegas doesn't care because its whole existence is meant for one thing – to have fun.
The city itself in an attraction. You can't help but be wowed by the giant neon signs that bring the city life every night. Exploring this city that never sleeps is obviously best done at night and this means your days are free to lounge by the pools in some of the world's most amazing hotels.
Vegas was built on gambling, so to deny this side of it and bypass the casinos would be to ignore its history. Las Vegas Boulevard, or ‘The Strip', is where you will find the biggest and brashest casinos including the Venetian, the Bellagio, the Mirage and the Luxor. These vast, sprawling mega hotels have thousands of rooms, massive casino floors and non-stop entertainment.
In the Venetian, you can cruise around the hotel along gondola-laden canals and visit a replica of St Mark's Square; watch water ‘dance' to music every evening in the Bellagio; the Mirage is home to Siegfried and Roy's white tigers; and the Luxor is a giant black pyramid that showcases some of the city's best performances from international artists, dancers and entertainers.

Gambling is the raison d'ętre for Las Vegas, so go to the area around Fairmont street and see where it all started back in the 1930s. You will see iconic neon signs that have been photographed a billion times as well as the city's oldest casinos such as the Golden Nugget.
After gambling, Las Vegas is famous for its shows. You will never have time to see them all so to help you narrow down your choice, the biggest, best and most impressive show of them all is the Cirque du Soleil. Many of the biggest hotels host their own versions of this exciting mix of circus art and street entertainment.
If you still have time and can tear yourself away from the casinos, you should test your nerves by riding the Manhattan Express roller coaster at the New York New York Hotel and the High Roller at the Stratosphere Hotel which circles the outside of the building over 100 stories up.
